Easy Steamed Vegan Dumplings

Ever have one of those days where you’re craving takeout, but also want it homemade. NOW you can have both. These easy steamed vegan dumplings will hit every spot when you’re in the mood for some takeout. They may look intimidating, but they’re super easy to make and worth every bit of work.

If this isn’t comfort food, then I have no idea what is. These Vegan dumplings are made without adding any oil and are steamed to perfection! You can easily pan fry them if you’re looking for that crispy texture, it just depends on your personal preference.

What can I add as the filling?

Anything you want really. I like adding a variety of veggies every time I make it, it also depends on what I usually have on hand in my fridge. I love the pre-cut vegetable slaws you can usually find at your local grocery store. They’re easier to cook down because the size they’re cut into. I always always always add mushrooms though, it just adds a lot more depth to the flavor. Get creative and see what you and your family prefer 🙂

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, you can! Because I’m usually making these in a large amount for my family, I tend to stuff the dumplings ahead of time and then just steam them up right before I serve (they only take about 5-6 mins to steam up). Just be sure to keep the stuffed dumplings somewhat moist prior to steaming – they will harden if they’re left out so make sure you use a damp paper towel to cover the dumplings.

  1. In a hot pan, add the ginger and garlic - sauté for 30 seconds and then add the broccoli slaw and mushrooms - sauté for 2 minutes

  2. add the tamari, rice vinegar, hoisin, and chili paste - sauté for 4-5 minutes

  3. add the green onions and sauté for an additional 2 minutes

  4. remove the pan from heat and set aside

  5. begin boiling water in your steamer and get the steamer insert ready with parchment paper by cutting out a half moon (fit for the insert).

  6. Start stuffing your dumplings - wet your index finger and wet the edges of the gyoza wrapper, put roughly 1 tsp of filling in the center and tightly close the dumpling (folding inward down the middle).- make sure you press down the edges to ensure they're closed tight

  7. To make the dumpling design, hold your left thumb down on the corner edge of the wrapper and using your right thumb, fold the edge of the wrapper towards your left thumb.

  8. Fill the remaining dumplings and transfer to steamer insert

  9. Steam for 5 - 6 minutes and enjoy :)
